Two days after a League game at Stamford Bridge, we played a Monday night floodlit friendly in East London. This match was billed as the official opening of West Ham’s floodlights, though they had actually first been switched on six months earlier for a friendly match against Spurs.

Charlton Athletic 2 (1) Reid pen 30 Stuart 82

Charlton’s first game away from The Valley, and there seemed to be more of us and a motley band of programme collectors than there were ’Latics supporters.

Didn’t stop us losing, of course, (well, it was Selhurst Park) and this made it eight League defeats on the trot in London.
