Friendly, The Invicta Ground
Sunderland 4
Royal Arsenal 0
We stayed down in London after our Saturday friendly to play a Monday afternoon game against Royal Arsenal. This was our second game against them, and the last time we played at the Invicta Ground.
Friendly
Sunderland 0
Corinthians 2
We haven’t given the venues of some of our early friendlies in London. This isn’t an oversight, but reflects the fact that the amateur sides used more than one ground.
Most of their games were played at the Queen’s Club in Kensington, but the Corinthians used other grounds, including The Oval and Crystal Palace.
As with most away games against them, we lost this one: bear in mind though that Corinthians supplied most of the England team at that time.
Division One, Stamford Bridge
Sunderland 3 (0) Gurney, Burbanks, Duns
Chelsea 1 (0) Mills
Sunderland: Mapson, Hall, Collin, Thomson, Johnston, Hastings, Duns, Carter, Gurney, Gallacher, Burbanks
Attendance: 48,901
League Position after match: 2nd
Our fourth successive win sent us second in the table, with George Collin enjoying an extended run at left-back. Although George made 31 league appearances that season, he only played in one FA Cup game and therefore missed out on a winners medal.
