A late Bobby Marshall winner, when a draw seemed like a fair result; two points kept us on top of the table.
This was a rather odd season, with purple patches interspersed among periods of sheer mediocrity (five straight wins, then one point from four games, then this win in the middle of a run of four wins out of five).
We kept hitting the top of the table, but were never consistent enough to stay there, and finished the season third.
We won home and away against an Arsenal side that reached Wembley, and who were starting to shake off the label of "an unattractive team whom Sunderland supporters simply will not pay to watch", given them by Argus in the Football Echo a couple of seasons previously (putting Arsenal firmly in the same category as Bradford City, Notts County and Oldham).
