1908 v Woolwich Arsenal

Division One

Sunderland 4 (1) Hogg (2) Holley Bridgett
Woolwich Arsenal 0

Sunderland: Roose, Agnew, Forster, Daykin, Thomson, Low, Mordue, Hogg, Brown, Holley, Bridgett

Attendance: 14,000

League Position after match: 6th

Some controversy when George Holley shoulder-charged the keeper, clutching the ball, over the goal-line. A goal was given (and credited to George) - it seems the controversy was more over who was recorded as scoring the goal than whether it was a foul or not.

This is still our best-ever away win over Arsenal. Our next away game that season was even better - a thumping and record-breaking 9-1 victory over the forces of darkness.
