Well the vast majority of you who either plumped for mid-table or a top half finish couldn't have been more wrong. Let's see if you fare any better with this one:

Our chances of staying up under Mr Di Canio are:

  GET YOUR FOOTBALL ECHO DELIVERED

We annually remind members of the availability on subscription of the Football Echo. Sunderland is now almost alone in England in still producing a Saturday evening paper dedicated to football and we must hope the Echo continues to thrive.  It may be of particular interest to those who only occasionally get to see games as its full match reports, player interviews and a thriving letters column keep readers well informed about goings-on at the club and also in local senior and junior sport.

Happily, the season-long subscription, starting on 11th August until the final week-end in May 2013 has been frozen at £50.  For a further £15 subscribers will also receive midweek editions of the Sunderland Echo which contain match reports of games played at other times than on a Saturday.

Payment can be by cheque to Northeast Press Ltd. or by credit card to :

 Standing at games

Lord Justice Taylor's report on the Hillsborough disaster, whilst excellent in many respects, made one assumption which has proved utterly false.  He argued that the provision of stadia seating would, over time, encourage spectators to adapt to a normality of sitting rather than standing to watch football.  23 years on a significant proportion of fans still prefer to stand even in all-seater stadia and match-day stewards have an impossible task in attempting to impose sitting on a large mass of fans.  Why is it, legislatively, safe to stand at a League 1 ground but not in the Championship and at a pop concert at the SoL but not a football match?

Over the years various organisations, both locally and nationally, have campaigned for nothing more than the availability of choice and, even if you are not a member of the Football Supporters' Federation, you must surely be aware of its work on this issue.  If you prefer to sit, how often are you irritated by those in front of you blocking your view?   If you prefer to stand, how often are you branded by those behind you as selfish?

Governments of all political hue have firmly resisted the challenge of solving this problem, fearful of being blamed for another disaster.  But Hillsborough wasn't caused by standing as the recent independent report has shown and stadia are so much safer now in many respects anyway.  There are signs that the politicians are at least now prepared to enter into the debate on solving this choice issue.  You can help to support those who have taken up the cudgels in a number of ways, all of which are explained on the FSF's website at :
