SAFC Women

As part of its support for the whole club, the London Branch has supported its Women’s team for a number of years, specifically since its acceptance into the FA Women’s Super League. For several years this included sponsorship of named players and publicity of the Branch at Women’s games. The national nature of the leagues has also provided an opportunity to add vocal support to the team’s games in the Southern half of the country.

The team currently plays in the second tier of the competition and has a declared, but so far thwarted, ambition for promotion to the top league. Whilst remaining part of the Sunderland family, the women’s club has in 2025, through part ownership and investment by a global investment firm, been boosted towards its aims, including the appointments of a new Chief Executive and Technical Director.

The new ownership has embraced the long and successful history of the club and the part it played in the development of former players Lucy Bronze, Steph Houghton, Beth Mead, Jill Scott and Demi Stokes who went on to become England internationals. There is a positive excitement about the future towards which the Branch can hopefully continue to play its part
