The London Branch is delighted to add its congratulations to George Forster whose service to supporters has been recognised by the Football League in its SMG Insight Awards. George has been named as Supporter of the Year for the SkyBet Championship and goes forward for the overall Award which will be announced on Sunday 15th April.
Our Branch was one of the first exiled group of fans to become affiliated to the parent Supporters’ Association and many of our members will have come to know George whenever calling in at the Association’s offices, first in Roker Park, then later in Roker Baths Road and now in Monk Street at the Wheat Sheaf. George was there at the start in 1965 and is still there now, aged 91, attending the office 5 days a week and on match days, taking bookings for away travel, selling programmes and memorabilia and answering endless queries from supporters spread far and wide.
A worthy award to a delightful and dedicated man whose totally volunteer service is the both the foundation and durability of the Association’s success.
Sunderland AFC chief executive, Martin Bain, has commented : “George is a real part of the fabric of this football club and this recognition is richly deserved.
“He has given so much, and continues to do so to this day. He is loved by everyone he comes into contact with and to see one of the game’s unsung heroes honoured in this way is fantastic.
“We all hope George takes the overall EFL Supporter of Year prize this weekend, but he is already a winner in the minds of Sunderland fans everywhere. This football club is truly lucky to have him.”
Footnote: Sadly George lost out in the National Award to Mustafa El-Bayati of Northampton Town who was rewarded for his unwavering support of, and fantastic engagement with, the club. He’s still “our” Champion though.
